New beginnings and sports

Men's indoor handball, canoe slalom and kayak competitions were held at these games for the first time. West German equestrian Liselotte Linsenhof became the first woman to win dressage gold, and archery returned to the Olympic program after a 52-year absence.

Heroes to remember

American swimmer Mark Spitz won seven gold medals and broke seven world records. However, it was the young Soviet gymnast, Olga Korbut, who stole the show at the Munich Games. She had a winning streak in team events, but failed in singles. She then renewed her reign with victories in the apparatus finals, where she attracted the admiration of fans around the world.
