African boycott
22 African countries boycotted the 1976 Montreal Olympics. Tanzania organized the boycott in protest against the New Zealand rugby team's tour of then-apartheid South Africa, where New Zealand was scheduled to participate in the Olympics.
New beginnings and sports
For the first time, women's basketball, rowing and handball joined the Games. Hockey matches were also held on an artificial field for the first time.
Immortal heroes
Cuban Alberto Juantorena achieved the first two victories of his career in the 400 meters and 800 meters. Japan's women's volleyball team proved to be the strongest, winning all their matches, with Hungary's Miklós Nemeth winning the javelin event to become the first son of an Olympic track and field champion to win a gold medal of his own.
The perfect Nadia
14-year-old Romanian gymnast Nadia Comaneci was the undisputed star of these Games. She excelled in her performance in the parallel bar competition at different heights, achieving the first perfect score in history of 10.0. She went on to earn the top seven marks in total.
